Birthday Hike

Leave it to my dad to want to celebrate his birthday at the Stanford Dish! Happy (belated) Birthday daddy, may we continue to climb higher peaks!!!! ❤

P.S. For anyone who hasn’t looked into Charity Miles, it definitely beats Pokemon Go at providing an impetus to go out there and break a sweat!!! Although, my sister did catch 2 Pikachus and overtake a Pokemon gym at the Dish!! ;P

Level 20??! @_@

In Search Of the Muse

Growing up, I filled my head with romantic stories between cafes and artists, stories of a period when Parisian cafes would play sponsor to the growth of creativity, one cup at a time. It’s not surprising that I continue to haunt cafes, chasing the muse…

Here’s today’s cafe experience…I hope it inspires you as it did me!!! ❤️❤️ 🤗🤗🤗

“What, Miss Brooks, are the chances for a girl, fairly pretty, fairly intelligent, to come to the city and make good?”

“The chances” said Louise, “are the ones she takes.” (Louise Brooks)

I’ve held on to the quote above for almost a decade and it still makes me emotional. Louise Brooks is a great inspiration because she just didn’t care to fail or succeed. All she wanted was to do herself good. I mean, this lady said that she learnt to dance by watching Charlie Chaplin act and learnt to act by watching Martha Graham dance! #icon ❤️ Shilpa

I was watching an interview of the global rights activist Zainab Salbi. I was struck by her radiance and the fluidity with which she expressed the concerns she had for liberating women from oppressive societies all over the world. I was mesmerized by her observation that:

fighting for your rights can be as simple as wearing red lipstick.

In her earlier years as an activist, she assumed that in order to help and understand women, she had to become androgynous, only to discover through experience that the greatest thing a woman can do to rebel against oppression is to celebrate her right to be female.

To celebrate herself.

So wear heals, put some lipstick on… And smile… Happy Women’s Day!

I hope you make all the wonderful women in your life feel special, beautiful and loved! ❤️💋🎉

Between You and Them

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.

Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,

people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.

Be kind anyway.

If you are successful,

you will win some false friends and some true enemies.

Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,

people may cheat you.

Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,

someone could destroy overnight.

Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,

they may be jealous.

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,

people will often forget tomorrow.

Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,

and it may never be enough.

Give the best you’ve got anyway.

You see,

in the final analysis it is between you and God;

it was never between you and them anyway.

-Mother Teresa

It took me forever to realize that every version of me is a part of me and that I don’t have to bridge the gaps between these versions for the sake of people’s comprehensibility of me. Change is our greatest instrument and it is our only constant. If we don’t change, we stagnate. And I still have miles to go before I sleep. 🙏  ❤️ Shilpa

The Little Boy Who Cried Just In Time

The downpour caused by El Niño has resulted in this spectacle of the loveliest blues and greys in the Los Angeles sky… It’s moments like these when I’m glad that I’m here to witness the moods of the sky through the high rises of LA! 🙏Keep the rains coming!!!! 😍

Dear Pilgrim

My memorable trip to the Arctic Circle earlier this year was one moment where I felt completely ‘present’ as to where I was… #lifechanging

I came across this poem today and felt that it was the perfect thing to share. I hope it reminds you, as it did me, that where you are, you were meant to be and where you will be, you deserve to be... ❤ Shilpa

DISCLAIMER: Don’t get bogged down by the ‘religious-ness’ of the text below because it will distract you from the gem of the human truth that this poem contains 🙂
This place where you are right now
God circled on a map for you.
Wherever your eyes and arms and heart can move
Against the earth and the sky,
The Beloved has bowed there –
Our Beloved has bowed there knowing
You were coming.
I could tell you a priceless secret about
Your real worth, dear pilgrim,
But any unkindness to yourself,
Any confusion about others,
Will keep one
From accepting the grace, the love,
The sublime freedom
Divine knowledge always offers to you.
Never mind, Hafiz, about
The great requirements this path demands
Of the wayfarers,
For your soul is too full of wine tonight
To withhold the wondrous Truth from this world.
But because I am so clever and generous,
I have already clearly woven a resplendent lock
Of his tresses
As a remarkable truth and gift
In this poem for you.
